Dear Owen,
Why, oh why, could you not stop growing? It feels like just yesterday we were praying and pleading with God to bless us with a child. The joy we felt when we discovered our prayers had been answered, is too great to even express. I remember our trip to the Hershey Hotel on Valentines Day when we discovered we would be having a baby boy. We loved talking about you and imagining the little boy you would become. But our imaginations didn't do you justice. You are far better than we could ever have imagined! We delight in you, Owen. Your happy disposition and energetic personality are a joy to be around.
This past month you've become incredibly mobile. You are not yet walking, but have started to pull up on your own. You will take some steps if we are holding your hands. And boy can you crawl- quick! You're curiosity has you checking out just about everything in your path... and out of your path. You pull on hanging cords, and plugs, and curtains, etc. Needless to say, we have had to watch you much more closely. You've started what we call your "shy" smile, where you tilt your head completely sideways and smile. It's so stinkin cute. You love throwing and chasing after balls. They are the first thing you go for in the playroom. You also love your rubber ducks and do a pretty good job saying "quack quack" when playing with them. We've noticed you starting to enjoy taking things out of containers and then putting them back in. It's so funny to watch you discover new things. You LOVE balloons and I'm sure will enjoy seeing them at your party today. You also love being chased. You get so excited the moment one of us gets down on all fours, and you immediately start laughing and take off in the opposite direction, stopping periodically to look back and see how close we are to catching you. It's so fun to chase after you- and you are incredibly ticklish!
A case of croup had us making a trip to the doctor with you this past month. But thankfully you seem to be feeling much better now. While we were at the doctors, you had a weight check which has you at 20lbs, 11oz. I'm actually surprised you are not bigger than that. You eat a TON. You absolutely love macaroni and cheese, and will have multiple helpings if offered. I'd say it's your favorite food. You also love fruits and veggies, and rarely turn them away. You eat very fast! You often clear your plate before we've even sat down to enjoy our own meals!
Your napping schedule has turned into a huge mystery to me. You seem to want to drop one of your naps... unfortunately, it's the wrong one. You are SO SO SO tired by 9 or 10am, that you absolutely have to go down for a nap. You'll nap for a good 2 hours or more, then have lunch, and play some more. But if I try to put you down for an afternoon nap, you just sit (or stand) in your crib for 2 hours talking to yourself and your little stuffed friends. Ugh. I'm sure we will figure something out eventually. Speaking of your little stuffed friends, y ou now sleep with Zibby (your zebra lovey) and Joey (your giraffe lovey). You definitely love them, but for whatever reason you throw them over the side of your crib every single time you go down to sleep. It's pretty amusing to watch you on the video monitor- you drop them over the side and then stare down, pointing at them as though you have no idea how they got there. You still suck on your favorite two fingers when you're tired. And when we lay you down to sleep, you pull up the neck of your sleep sack and suck on that too.
We finally got you into your own little baby pool, and you loved it! You won't keep a hat on, which makes keeping you sunburn-free slightly more difficult. I ended up putting SPF all through your hair... sorry buddy. Mommy has no idea how else to handle this. :)
Owen, I hope you know how much I adore you. Daddy and I love you more than any words could ever express. From your white-blonde hair, chubby cheeks, and goofy grin, all the way down to your pudgy little feet. You bring us so much happiness. The very thought of you brightens our day.
As I said in the beginning, we could not have imagined having a little boy, as wonderful and special as you are. You have filled a void we didn't know existed. We thank Jesus always and often for the incredible gift you are to us. We pray for wisdom and guidance from Him to parent you as He would. We will mess up, and make mistakes along the way- this is a certainty. But know that we will always love you and have your best interests at heart. We pray you will come to know Jesus as your own personal Savior at the youngest possible age. And that you will grow into a Godly young man that seeks to serve Him. This is our hope and prayer for you as your parents.
I cannot believe you are ONE! It's been one of the happiest years of our lives, Owen.
